National Hispanic Heritage Month Activity #1

I am actually a week behind.  I should have asked the students to complete an activity last week.  But, due to my own lack of planning, as well as the fact that every grade in the Upper School was on overnight retreats last week, better late than never, as the saying goes.  Besides, I am better organized than this time last year; at least I am thinking about engaging the students in one activity per week.

I began the lesson with two questions:  1. What is the name of the month-long celebration honoring the achievements of people of Hispanic heritage announced last week during assembly; and 2.  When does the celebration begin and end? The students answered both questions accurately.

The students then worked collaboratively on a Hispanic heritage scavenger hunt, using materials which accompany Did You Know...

The students worked together in groups of three to five, depending on the size of the class.  They seemed to enjoy the activity. They were engaged, worked collaboratively, and used critical thinking skills, while learning things about the contributions of people of Spanish-speaking descent they hadn't known prior.
